About us

The Department of Electrical Engineering was founded in 1978 as one of the first departments of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Taiwan's first university dedicated to advanced technological and professional education. The department launched its master's program in 1979 and its doctoral program in 1982. From the beginning, it has been defined by the integration of theory and practice: every undergraduate completes a capstone project, conceiving, building, and publicly presenting an original engineering work before graduation.

Over more than four decades, the department has grown from its roots in electrical power engineering into a comprehensive program spanning control systems, computer engineering, communications, and integrated circuit design.

Six Major Research Areas

Power and Energy — power system planning, analysis, protection, and dispatch; renewable energy and distributed generation; battery energy storage; power quality; railway electrification; and high-voltage engineering.

Power Electronics — AC motor drives, position and speed estimation and control, power converters, battery charging, soft-switching power supplies, uninterruptible power systems, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Systems Engineering — signals and systems, intelligent control, discrete-event dynamic systems, biomedical imaging and signal processing including medical ultrasound and MRI, telemedicine, computer vision, and pattern recognition.

Integrated Circuits and Systems — VLSI design, system-on-chip architectures, reconfigurable array processors, and advanced computing architectures.

Information and Communication — computer architecture, networking, parallel processing, computational intelligence, multimedia systems, neural networks, and wireless sensor networks, with equal emphasis on hardware design and software development.

Telecommunications — communication networks, VoIP, spread-spectrum systems, digital and wireless communications, satellite communications, broadband networks, smart antennas, RFID, and antenna design.

Accreditation and Global Engagement

The department's Bachelor of Science program has been accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) since 2008, and its Master's and doctoral programs since 2011. IEET is a signatory of the Washington Accord, so the department's accreditation is recognized internationally. The department maintains active industry–academia collaboration, including annual cooperative research projects and a joint research and development center established with Delta Electronics, and offers dual-degree pathways with partner universities abroad.

Our graduates pursue careers across Taiwan's power and energy, semiconductor, electronics, and information and communication industries — sectors in which Taiwan is among the most advanced in the world — or continue on to graduate study and research.
